Surat Thani Province
Surat Thani is one of the provinces in southern Thailand with a rich history and culture. It is filled with legends and beliefs that reflect the vibrant life and faith of the local people. The natural environment and these legends have shaped the way of life and are passed down through various rituals from generation to generation in Surat Thani. Let’s explore some of these legends.

1. The Legend of Ratchaprapa Dam

The legend of Ratchaprapa Dam, located in Khao Sok National Park, Surat Thani Province, is related to the construction of the dam and the changes in the landscape that occurred. Although the dam provides benefits in water management and electricity generation, its construction had significant impacts on the local community and nature.

Before the Ratchaprapa Dam was built, the area was a village and fertile agricultural land. The local people relied on nature and believed in sacred spirits residing in the forests and rivers. When the dam construction was announced in 1982, the villagers were informed they had to evacuate because their homes and farmland would be submerged. They were deeply saddened and opposed the dam’s construction, as they would lose their homes and beloved way of life.

Before the dam was built, villagers dreamed of an elderly guardian spirit who warned them that the area would be flooded and advised them to leave for their safety. The villagers believed this was a good sign from the sacred spirits protecting them, so they agreed to relocate. After the dam was completed and the area was flooded, what was once a village became a large reservoir known as “Ratchaprapa Dam” or “Guilin of Thailand.” The stunning landscape with towering limestone mountains and the stories of the original villagers are still remembered today.

Respect for nature, even though it has changed according to beliefs, remains. Villagers continue to perform rituals to protect against natural disasters. The dam is now a famous tourist destination, and visitors can admire the beauty of the transformed landscape while perhaps sensing the hidden stories beneath the beautiful waters. Legends often reflect changes in culture and nature, resulting from the deep connection of the locals to the land and their sacred beliefs.

2. The Legend of Phra That Chaiya

The legend of Phra That Chaiya is another important and ancient religious architecture in Surat Thani Province, located at Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya in Chaiya District. The legend is related to the history of the area and reflects the prosperity of Buddhism in the past.

The legend tells that after the Buddha’s passing, Phra Mahakasappa Thera distributed relics to important cities that had faith in Buddhism. Chaiya was one of the cities that received these relics, especially the relics of the Buddha’s hair and other relics, which were enshrined in a beautifully constructed chedi. Phra That Chaiya thus became a religious and cultural center of Chaiya in that era. Chaiya itself thrived during the Srivijaya Kingdom, which had widespread influence in Southeast Asia. Phra That Chaiya is not only revered by the people of Chaiya but also attracts visitors seeking blessings, especially during important Buddhist ceremonies like Magha Puja and Visakha Puja. Rituals often include merit-making, releasing birds and fish, and circling the chedi. Visitors believe that worshiping Phra That Chaiya brings prosperity and removes evil. Phra That Chaiya is a significant heritage for the people of Surat Thani, connecting them to Buddhism and local culture, which remains vibrant today.

The legends and beliefs of Surat Thani Province reflect the deep relationship between humans, nature, and sacred spirits. Understanding these legends from the past to the present helps preserve valuable culture and wisdom for future generations. Additionally, Surat Thani boasts beautiful tourist destinations that foreigners should visit, such as Koh Samui, known for its stunning beaches and as a popular destination for celebrities. Surat Thani is also one of the most developed provinces in Thailand.
